Spanish 6/49 and Daily 6/49 Lottery Games

Spain is renowned all over the world for its football strength and prowess. In addition to the fact that they are among the eight countries to have ever laid hands on the World Cup trophy, Spain is also home to the famous “El Classico” which is the match between the Spanish Football giants, Barcelona and twelve-times Champions League winners, Real Madrid. Spain also hosts the La Liga Santander and is home to world-renowned architectural masterpieces like the Sagrada Familia, La Rambla and the famous Royal Palace of Madrid.

In addition to all the above, Spain is also home to a number of fun-filled lottery games. Because of the advantages of lottery games on the socio-economic development of the country coupled with the fact that some of the lotteries give their players everyday chances to become millionaires, Spain has a wide variety of popular lottery games some of which are the Spanish 6/49, the Spanish Daily 6/49 (Bonoloto) and the Spanish “El Gordo de Navidad” lottery and the Spanish Quinela lottery. While the “El Gordo de Navidad” lottery is the most popular lottery and holds the record for the largest jackpot ever recorded in the history of lotteries in the world, the game is held only once a year around Christmas. The Spanish 6/49 and the Spanish Daily 6/49 give their players more chances to become millionaires.

The Spanish 6/49

The Spanish 6/49 lottery was created in August 1985, as a successor of its 1763 predecessor which was a 5/90 lottery created by Royal Decree. Organized by the Organismo Nacional de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (ONLAE), the Spanish 6/49 as the name indicates is follows a 6/49 matrix but with a twist, the Reintegro number.

Playing the Spanish 6/49

With this format, a player would have to choose six numbers from a pool containing 49 numbers from 1 to 49. The additional number known as the Reintegro number is not picked by the player but is assigned to each lottery ticket upon purchase. This number which usually ranges from 0 to 9 is used to determine the winner of the jackpot and also helps to increase the number of prize divisions for the Spanish 6/49 lottery.

Players can choose to pick their own numbers by simply marking their favorite numbers on the lottery’s selection slip. Another means of playing the Spanish 6/49 is by using the Lucky Dip feature which allows the lottery system to randomly pick six numbers between 1 and 49 on behalf of the player. The Lucky Dip feature can be played by simply asking the retailer to play a Lucky Dip or by checking the Lucky Dip box on the play slip. The Advance Play option which lets players play their selected numbers for a consecutive number of future draws. The cost per play for the Spanish 6/49 is €1.

Winnings and Prizes

The draws for the Spanish 6/49 lottery are held twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays. The draws take place at 9:30 PM in Spain’s Capital City, Madrid. Players are allowed to purchase tickets up till about an hour before the draws begin. The draw uses two drums, one containing 49 balls from which the six main balls will be drawn and the other holding 9 balls from which the Reintegro number will be drawn. The Spanish 6/49 jackpot amount is won when a player is able to hit all of the numbers drawn – six main numbers plus the Reintegro number. The Spanish 6/49 does not have a minimum jackpot amount but an estimate puts the starting jackpot amount at approximately €2.5 million. Also, there is no cap for the jackpot amount. This coupled with the fact that the jackpot amount is rolled over and added to that of the next draw if it is not won makes the jackpot amount to rise quickly and to very large amounts. In the event that more than one player wins the jackpot prize, it is shared equally among the winners.

Other prizes exist for matching only the six main numbers or five main numbers plus the bonus number. The Bonus Number also known as the Complementario number is also drawn during the draw and this number is exclusive to those who match 5 of the 6 main balls. Matching the Complementario number in addition to five of the main numbers boosts the prize amount for this category over 20 times. These are the first and second prize divisions. The rest of the prizes are won if a player matches any number of balls from 3 to 5. Also, there is a prize for matching the Reintegro number alone which amounts to the cost of a free ticket (€1). Till date, the largest jackpot amount of the Spanish 6/49 lottery stands at €67 million.

The Spanish Daily 6/49

The Spanish Daily 6/49, created on the 5th December 1990, is a lottery game that gives its players a chance every day to win. Like the name suggests, the game is played by selecting six numbers out of 49 numbers.

Playing the Daily 6/49

The game is played exactly like the Spanish 6/49 lottery game. The main difference between the two games is the fact that the Spanish 6/49 has just two draws per week but with the Daily 6/49, draws are held every day of the week with the exception of Sunday. Another difference between the two lotteries is the fact that with the Spanish 6/49, the bonus number is assigned to the ticket while with the Daily 6/49, the Bonus number is chosen by the player from the same 49-number field.

Winnings and Prizes

As has been mentioned above, draws take place every day of the week with the exception of Sunday. During the draws, seven balls are drawn from one drum – the first six balls are the main balls and the seventh ball is the Bonus ball. Draws take place in Madrid, Spain at 10:30 PM Spanish time. Again, like the Spanish 6/49, the Daily 6/49 uses two additional balls, the Complementario and Reintegro numbers. The Complementario number provides a boost to those players who match 5 balls plus this number. The boost amounts to approximately 20 times the initial prize amount. The Reintegro number is used to determine the jackpot winners who are expected to match all six main numbers plus this number. Players who match the Reintegro number alone get a ticket refund (€1). Other prizes exist for those who match 3, 4 or 5 of the main numbers.

It is worth noting that winnings from lotteries for Spanish citizens and residents are tax-free. However, money to be taken out of the country is subject to taxes in Spain. Also, both the Spanish 6/49 and the Daily 6/49 are open to international players who can participate in the lotteries through any trusted online lottery service provider.
